2018 - 2019 Grants

Community Foundation awards $320,956 in grants to 64 area nonprofits

IOWA CITY – The Community Foundation of Johnson County (CFJC) awarded $320,956 in grants to local nonprofit organizations at the annual at CFJC Grant Award Luncheon. RSM and US Bank were co-sponsors of the event which was held Oct. 17, 2018, at the Coralville Radisson Hotel and Conference Center.

Sixty-four area nonprofit organizations received funds for projects supporting the areas of health services, human services, education, arts and culture, environment and animals and public/societal benefit. Support for the grants comes from a combination of funds from the County Endowment Re-granting Program, CFJC Donor Advised Funds, CFJC Community Endowment Funds and the 5224Good Giving Circle.

The County Endowment Re-Granting Program distributes a percentage of the state’s commercial gaming tax revenue annually to qualified community foundations in counties that do not have a state-issued gaming license.

Executive Director Shelly Maharry said it’s inspiring and very rewarding to see grant awards transform into purpose connecting those who care with those who need. To grow the number and amount of grants awarded, she encourages others to support CFJC. “Our mission is a reminder that CFJC, in partnership with donors and nonprofit partners, helps meet needs in our local communities. Together, we are giving for good supplying a boost to those who need it most throughout all of Johnson County.”

Sarah Maiers, CFJC president, said during this grant cycle the foundation received more than 100 grant requests totaling $986,594. “We are grateful to our many contributors and volunteers for their financial support and gifts of time that champion these very deserving nonprofit organizations. Their programs have an ability to transform this grant support into meaningful opportunities that benefit residents and our communities.”
