2015 Summership Program Launched

Feb 01, 2015

A new program will provide scholarships to attend summer camps to students whose families would otherwise be unable to provide the opportunity. Camps in most any area are eligible for Summerships. Summerships is a collaborative project of United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties (UWJWC) and the Community Foundation of Johnson County (CFJC).

The project started with Herky on Parade2. The University of Iowa’s beloved mascot, Herky, struck a new pose for the revival parade held in 2014. Revenue from the sale of 84 Herky statues went toward an endowment fund. (Read CFJC Tim Krumm' and UWJC Joe Pugh's guest editorial.)

UWJWC and CFJC are launching a capital campaign to raise funds for 84 Summerships – matching the number of statues sold. The UI Athletics Department and Iowa City / Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau are also supporters of the Summership scholarship program.

You can be a partner too. Your contribution of $5,000 will produce a Summership scholarship every year forever, and includes naming rights as well as an opportunity to specify camps or programs for which the scholarships may be used. Call CFJC at 319.337.0483 to discuss a named Summership scholarship.
